Tune in to Channel 6 on Thursday, May 9th on the Morning Show to hear from CACRC's Executive Director Nancy Jo Craig, JDFS's CEO Lisa Conescu, and scholarship recipient Dwight Davison talk about our laptop program. JDFS has been issuing laptops to all of its scholarship recipients since 2006. Since then, over 1100 computers have been distributed! With the help of Channel 6 WDSU and CACRC (Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council) we hope to collect even more laptops to give to these students from now until August 1st. If you would like to help, please take your computer to your closest drop-off location. Please make sure your computers have a Dual-Core processing system, Windows 7 (or newer), and WiFi capabilities. CACRC is the only place in Louisiana certified to recycle computers and completely wipe your computer clean. As always, all donations to JDFS are tax-deductible. It's time to start thinking about the School Drive for the 2013-2014 year! The 2012-2013 School Drive will be held February 4-8, 2013. Please take a moment to designate a COORDINATOR for your Jefferson Dollars for Scholars fundraiser. How Will Your Students Benefit From Jefferson Dollars For Scholars? 1. Each Elementary and Middle School will be able to award at least one summer enrichment camp scholarship again this spring. In addition, all schools that contribute 100% or more will be awarded an additional camp scholarship. Last year's top fund-raisers were Audubon Elementary, which raised an amazing 755% of their goal and Hazel Park, which raised an impressive 395% of their goal. 2. High School Seniors are eligible for college scholarships as described in the applications distributed through high school counselors. Each high school is also invited to participate in the ACT prep classes that is offered twice a year compliments of Jefferson Dollars for Scholars. Since 2006, each college scholarship recipients has also been offered a refurbished laptop for college. The laptop stays with them all four years so the students have the most valuable school supply for the 21st century. 3. Future graduating classes will be eligible for college scholarships when they become high school seniors. 4. The School Drive is a powerful tool for our fund-raising in the business community and in the private sector since our students and schools are INVOLVED PARTICIPANTS in Jefferson Dollars for Scholars fundraising. Dollars for Scholars was founded on the principle that if everyone in the community gave $1, every student in that community will be able to go to college. We are proud that the Jefferson Parish Public School System is part of this wonderful tradition for the past 20 years. P.S. Causeway Blvd. This is the 4-story gray UNO Jefferson Campus building. Our office is located on the 4th floor in Suite 429. Hours for pick up are 1-5 Mon-Fri of this week (6/4-6/8) and 1-5 Mon-Wed. of next week (6/11-6/13).Students will have to bring a picture ID and expect to be in the office for 15-20 mins. filling out additional paperwork. For one reason or another, each year JDFS has some enrichment camp scholarships that are not used. This year, our partnership with CASA has ensured that all of our enrichment camp scholarships will be enjoyed. This year we are giving 14 scholarships to camps as varied as the Audubon Zoo to the Girl Scouts and many in between. All you need to do is send in your grades from the Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 semesters to the JDFS office along with the Scholarship renewal form here! We do not need an official transcript from your college- just something from the university that shows your grades. Normally recipients make a copy of their report cards or their grades from online. We will be emailing all recipients a copy of the Scholarship renewal form so please tell your friends and family who are also JDFS recipients to be on the lookout for it. Thank you for your patience. 3/1/12 Amazing Culinary Scholarship Opportunity! If you aspire to study culinary arts, this is the opportunity of a lifetime! The 2012 John Besh and Bride Mayor Scholarship Program is accepting applications now. The recipient will receive full tuition to the International Culinary Center's French Culinary Institute in New York City. The scholarship also covers all supplies, housing in Brooklyn for the nine month duration of the program, round trip airfare PLUS round trip airfare for one trip home to New Orleans during the program, laptop, digital camera, an 8 week paid internship upon completion of the program, a year-long mentorship from a chef from Besh Restaurant Group, and more! Per the scholarship's requirements the successful applicant must be in a minority group, be 18 or older and have at least one year of experience working in a restaurant. This past Monday was our first fundraising event of 2012 and it was a hit! 21 people gathered at Corks N Canvas in Metairie for a little art therapy, which also happened to benefit JDFS as well. Our fabulous instructor, Kelly, led us through the creation of our 'Starry Night In NOLA' paintings while we enjoyed our wine and munchies. The atomosphere was merry, the tables were messy, and everyone was smiling through the paint splatters by the time the evening drew to a close. We want to extend our most sincere thanks to each and every artist who attended, and also to the wonderful people at Corks N Canvas, Metairie. New Orleans Magazine’s Restaurateur of the Year, Ralph Brennan, is a Friend of JDFS. Last November, Heritage Grill (a member of the Brennan family of restaurants) generously hosted JDFS’s board meeting for which they provided an array of amazing dishes. There was FOOD, REFRESHMENTS AND A "DJ". Due to the growth of cyber-based curriculum, a laptop has become essential to a college student. The purchase of laptops has been made possible by generous businesses and scholarship sponsors, including the AT&T Foundation, Entergy, Cox Communications, Capital One Bank, Ochsner, Huntington-Ingalls, the Brown Foundation, Jefferson Financial and many more. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In honor of our national organization's 50th anniversary, Scholarship America and Dollars for Scholars have created the "A Dollar a Day" in support of student success.
